Book  Herbert & Dorothy Fields

Directed By Jack Strawbridge

The 1999 revival of  "Annie Get Your Gun" is an updated version
of the old classic with new orchestrations and an updated script.
It won a Tony for best revival in 1999.

The heroine is a rough and tumble backwoods girl who becomes the star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and handy with a rifle. ("Doin' What Comes Natur'lly"). In the opening scene, Annie is persuaded to join Buffalo Bill's traveling Wild West Show, ("There's No Business Like Show Business"). She soon falls hopelessly in love with Frank Butler; the show's current featured shooting ace. But when Annie eclipses Frank as the show's main attraction, she realizes she'll have to make some hard choices if she wants to win the man she loves. ("You Can't Get a Man With a Gun").  Frank Butler is a big, sentimental fellow who is attracted only to sweet and demure girls ("The Girl That I Marry"). The rivalry between Annie and Frank heats up with "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better".  The show ends happily, showing that a girl with a gun can get a man with a gun.

Other beautiful Irving Berlin tunes in the show include: "They Say It's Wonderful", "My Defenses Are Down",  "I Got the Sun in the Morning", and " An Old Fashioned Wedding".

The New York production of Annie Get Your Gun opened at the Imperial Theatre on May 16, 1946 and ran for 1,147 performances. Ethel Merman was the original Annie Oakley, the biggest hit of her career. The current Broadway revival showcased the talents of the current first Lady of the Broadway Musical Theater, Miss Bernadette Peters.
