Meet
Me in St. Louis
by Hugh Wheeler
Music and Lyrics by Hugh Martin
& Ralph Blane
| Imagine yourself in St.
Louis, Missouri, in 1904. There, on a broad shady street in a pleasant
neighborhood, you will find an ornate Victorian house. In this house live
Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, their college-age son, two teen-age daughters, a
tomboy pre-teen daughter, a seven-year-old daughter, Mrs. Smith's father
and their feisty Irish cook.
Everyone in this household and all their friends and neighbors are egerly awaiting the opening of the St. Louis World Exposition in 1905. While they wait, they do the things people did at the turn of the century: earn a living, ride the trolley, have parties, eat ice cream, go trick-or-treating, sing, and dance. Before they finally attend the opening festivities of the 1905 World's Fair, someone will be promoted at work. New neighbors will move in next door. And, of course, someone will fall in love... |
