In
the summer of 2010, Off The Wall theatre went Into The Woods.
We were proud to present the Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine musical masterpiece
as only Off The Wall could do it. Remember our critically acclaimed
productions of Sweeney Todd and Company? Into
The Woods is Sondheim's most frequently performed show the favorite
of audiences everywhere. Act One is a hilarious fractured take on famous
fairy tales, including Cinderella, Jack in the Beanstalk, and Little Red
Riding Hood. They are woven neatly together into one complicated
farcical musical pantomime. But that's only the half of it. In Act Two,
we see what really happens after the Fairy Tales are over. What happens
when you "really get your wish?" The show makes stunning statements about
community responsibility and the nature of the family. And never had Sondheim's
music been so contagious. Of course,
Off The Wall Theatre
and Artistic Director Dale
Gutzman gaveg the show
their own unique stamp. With flying doors, moving trees, collapsing bridges,
skateboards and a tennis match, this was an Into The Woods
like no other. Gutzman mined the script for it's power and truth. He remembers
fondly the London production of the show, and how much more they gleaned
from the text and songs. Anne Van Deusen was the Musical Director
and put together a first class band for the show. She is the same gifted
talent who brought Sweeny Todd so brilliantly to life at Off
The Wall.
The amazing cast included
Off
The Wall regulars: Jeremy Welter as not only the Narrator, but
also in four other roles; Marilyn
White as the witch (her fourth time playing this role;) Sharon
Rise as the Baker's Wife; Christopher Elst as the Baker; Kristin
Pagenkopf as Jack's Mother; Jacquline Roush
as
Cinderella, Patrick McGuire as Jack; Heather Reynolds as
Rapunzel; Marcee Doherty as the Stepsister; Liz Mistele as
Little Red Riding Hood (perfect casting if we say so ourselves;) Michael
Davis as the father; making a special appearance, Karl Miller
as the Steward; and in a casting Coup, Lawrence
Lukasavage as the cow, Milky White! Playing our Princes were Doug
Clemons and Eric Nelson.
Technical Wizard David
Roper designed an environmental set that took us from a modern
city to a mythical forest. If you know the work of Off The Wall,
you know did an Into The Woods like was never seen before.
