Noreen Mortell

The Nursing Home

How different it is to see her now
A glaze over her lovely brown eyes
As if safeguarding her from the world outside.

Her demeanour though rattled at times
Remains calm and accepting
Her gentleness attracts and has a profound affect.

It wasn’t always easy
The beginning provided many challenges
Unwritten rules needed to be learned.

Though not bothered by everyday things
She sees right through the skirmishes
I wonder whose brain is diminished!

Her face lights up as you approach
Always delighted to have visitors
Time well spent by all.

Poet Noreen Mortell lives in Limerick. "I love the arts as a means to communicate and connect. I avoid defining myself by one thing," she said, pointing out that she is a music teacher, a mosaic artist and a writer. "I like to try new things, to stretch my limits and abilities and particularly enjoy seeing others do likewise. My next ambition is to write a non-fiction book." She believes "It's not what you have, It's what you do with what you have." Mortell can be reached at noreenob@hotmail.com.
