It has been a busy summer and autumn, with the conclusion of a successful
25th anniversary of Milwaukee Irish Fest, topped by a visit from Irish
President Mary McAleese.
On the darker side, unionist riots seared Belfast during the marching
season and sectarian violence continues to remind the world that conflict
over who best worships God remains as stupid and mind-numbing as as ever.
Yet, thinking positively, IRA weapons dumps were destroyed and years of
bloody loyalist feuding may be ending as the paras declare an end to their
fractious infighting. Whether or not the militias adhere to their promises
remains to be seen.
Samhain has come and gone, with the maple leaves now whipping across
the yard in their end-of-year frenzy. Winter looms, as a time for storytelling
and book reading, whiskey by the fireplace and enjoying canned fruits and
vegetables from the garden. Tom the cat is enjoying chasing mice near the
woodpile and the chickens better keep laying or the season’s stewpot threatens.
Now back to work.
