Every time a complex human emotion threatened to break the surface of my
consciousness, out would come terrible cleverness," writes David Rakofi,
a frequent guest on public radio's This American Life. Blurring
the line between journalism and satire, Rakofi's first book of essays,
Fraud,
describes, among other things, a Buddhist retreat led by Steven Seagal
and Rakofi's own brief stint as Sigmund Freud in the Christmas window at
Barneys. Rakofi's writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine,
GQ, Vogue, and Salon.com. His next collection, Don't Get Too Comfortable,
will be published in 2005.
Arranmore at the Metropolis
There's no better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Chicago than
with Arranmore, one of the most popular Irish folks bands the Windy City
has ever heard.
Come get your fill of Celtic spirit when the Metropolis Performing Arts
Centre presents a special live St. Patrick's Day concert featuring Arranmore
and special guests, the McNulty Irish Dancers, Thursday, March 17, 2005.
Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $22.50. Metropolis is located at 111
W. Campbell St., in downtown Arlington Heights. For tickets and information,
call the Metropolis box office, (847) 577-2121, stop by Tues.- Sun., 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. (or show time), or purchase tickets online at

Named after an island off the Northwest coast of Donegal in Ireland,
Arranmore can be described as an Irish pub band, but over the last 15
years has evolved into what is better called an Americana/Folk/Celtic
music-influenced act. Based in Chicago, Arranmore is in the truest sense
of the definition, a "musical melting pot," and can be found frequently
appearing in theater concerts, town festivals, private functions and
selected Irish events all over the city. Here's what the press has said:
"Arranmore blends traditional Irish folk songs with a modern folk
sensibility for an infectious hybrid sound." - Chicago Sun Times
"A folkies' dream." - Irish American Post
Arranmore has evolved "...from a traditional Irish pub band to a versatile
Folk-Americana act that hasn't forgotten its Celtic roots." - Chicago
Tribune
Arranmore has released several CDs, all to critical acclaim, including
their
current disc "The Collection," a retrospective of many of the group's
best
and most requested songs. For more information and the band's complete
discography, go to http://www.arranmore.com
Also part of this special St. Patrick's Day event, Metropolis welcomes
special guests, the McNulty Irish Dancers of the McNulty School of Irish
Dance, one of the largest, most active dance schools in the Midwest. The
school offers Irish dance lessons throughout the Chicago suburban area,
in Bloomington, Champaign, and Rockford, Illinois, and in Dubuque, Iowa.
For information, click on http://www.mcnultyirishdancers.com.
The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is conveniently located in the
heart
of Arlington Heights' new downtown business district, at the intersection
of
Campbell and Vail Ave., one block south of the Metra station. Free parking
is always available on the first and fourth floors of the public garage
behind the theater. Metropolis also offers wheelchair, easy access seating
and a hearing amplification system. For more information and a complete

Shank Hall Goes Irish
**************************
Peter Gest has been one of the hardest working club owners in the midwest
for a very long time. His Shank Hall has hosted a number of Irish, Scottish,
and Irish-American and pan-Celtic acts over the past decade plus. And this
year he is continuing to provide music that should appeal to people across
the board in this genre. Shank Hall has already hosted Paul Brady, and
on Feb. 25 continues the music with The Fenians, the Orange County rockers
with a strong Irish beat, but mixing in influences of Rock, Folk, Bluegrass,
Jazz, and World music The Sandcarvers will open. Solas, led by Seamus Egan,
is a band that has turned traditional music on its ear since its founding.
People who have left the band are amongst the
pantheon of players, and the band is still as strong, or maybe stronger,
as
a result of the personal changes. They will be in on March 4. Milwaukee
U2
Tribute band U2 Zoo will be filling the seats the next night, March
5. And
the Celtic Fiddle Festival, consisting of Breton Christian LeMaître,
Irish
from London Kevin Burke,Irish from Newcastle on Tyne Ged Foley and Quebecois
fiddler Andre Brunet will be along on March 8. This is the first trip into
Milwaukee for the quartet since the death of Johnny Cunningham, and the
addition of Andre Brunet, (isn't that one of those Francofied Irish names
that fill the hills of Quebec?) brings a new dimension to thedelivery.
And Ged Foley, long known as one of the best guitarists in Irish music,
can scratch a mean catgut himself.
Not content to just fill his club with music, Peter's ACG will be bringing
in two powerful performers. Mary Black, she of the lovely and strong
voice, will be at Alverno College's Pitman Theatre on March 10. One of
the famed five Black siblings, Mary Black has long set the standard for
Irish female singers. And all these years on, she has only gotten stronger.
Then the pride of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Natalie MacMaster and
band will be at the Pitman on April 2. One of the more entertaining fiddlers
to come out of Canada, Natalie and band have a spunk that is not contained
in your basic traditional music form. (414) 382-6044
So, this would make one city's Irish music bill for the Green Season,
if
Milwaukee was a normal city. But, we aren't a normal city. This is one
promoter, and we are lucky to have someone someone there to take the
chances.

Old Style Singing
**************************
Ah, for those who did not grow up in the tradition, sean nos singing
can be difficult. Actually, for those of us who did grow up in the tradition,
it
could still be difficult. However, sean nos, the Gaelic words for "old
style", reflect back to a tradition that can be traced from North Africa
to
the Gregorian Chants of the Middle Ages and onwards to modern Ireland.
And Milwaukee will be a focal point of sean nos singing this coming weekend.
The UWM Celtic Studies Program is hosting "Sean-Nós Milwaukee" on
Feb. 25 and 26.
A number of noted, award-winning singers living within the United States
will gather in Milwaukee for this unique weekend of song sharing,
workshops, sessions, archival recordings and performance. Award-winning
writer and founder of Cló Iar-Chonnachta (www.cic.ie), Mícheál
Ó Conghaile, will present a lecture on the history and develop.m.ent
of the largest Irish language recording and publishing company in Ireland.
Following this talk, a special gathering of sean-nós singers will
give a public concert, which will be recorded by Irish radio and will include
performances by such exponents of the craft as Celia Ní Fhatharta,
Lillis Ó Laoire, Áine Meenaghan, Meaití Jo Sheamais
Ó Fatharta, Jimmy Crowley and many more.
The Friday events all take place at UWM's Greene Hall, a wonderful venue
for such things. Saturday's stuff is split amongst Greene Hall, Paddy's
Pub on Murray, and County Clare for an evening show.

And Then There Was Dancing
*****************************
Hey, let us make Milwaukee the center of the Irish cultural universe
for the
entire weekend. Tony Ryan from Galway returns to teach workshops on
Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26. Tony is known internationally for
his teaching and his dancing style. He will share several sets from his
repertoire. Tony will conduct workshops on Saturday from 10 a.m. until
4 p,m, and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 1p.m. John Whelan, he of the manic
box playing, will play for set dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Madison's
Public House Ceili Band will play for the closing ceili on Sunday afternoon.
A lodging special is available through the Residence Inn in downtown Milwaukee.
The weekend rate for Set Dancers is $81 and includes a hot breakfast. There
is a separate charge for parking. Hey, if not for the dancing, there is
the music. But there is the dancing. Ain't it grand?
The Milwaukee Set Dance Club sponsors classes, dances and special events.
But the foundation of their activities is dancing each Wednesday throughout
the year. They gather for weekly dances at the American Legion Post --
North Shore in Shorewood.

Riverdance/Decca Release Original Cast Recording
Bill Whelan's Riverdance, the original Irish dance and music sensation,
celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, Decca
Broadway will release a 10th anniversary edition of the best-selling original
cast recording which includes one new song composed by Bill Whelan, and
stunning new arrangements of two songs from the original album.
The internationally acclaimed theatrical event will continue its extensive
U.S. tour with a special engagement at Radio City Music Hall, where the
show was first introduced to American audiences.
Riverdance is an international company of 70 performers in a show tellintg
the story of Ireland’s music and dance heritage and how its evolution was
influenced by other world cultures. The music ranges from traditional Celtic
rhythms with melting fiddles to acapella choral arrangements and even tribal
drums and guitars. When united, the varied musical traditions weave a theatrical
journey through time with world-wide appeal.
Composer Bill Whelan is noted for his work in the theater, film and
television. His films include Some Mother's Son, Dancing At
Lughnasa
and Lamb, which he co-wrote with Van Morrison. His original Riverdance
album is certified platinum and won the Grammy Award for "Best New Show
Album" in 1997. The ensemble was Last seen in New York five years ago during
its 18-month Broadway premiere at the Gershwin Theatre (Riverdance on Broadway).
To coincide with Saint Patrick’s Day festivities, Riverdance’s tenth
anniversary tour highlight will be a one-week stint at Radio City Music
Hall from March 10th – 17th inclusive. CDs are expected to be in stores
March 8, 2005 on Decca Broadway

Celtic Women International Programs Announced
Friday, March 4, 2005 "St. Patrick’s Purgatory"
Seosai Nic Rabhartaigh -- This "purgatory" is aptly named for a practice
begun in the Middle Ages and once attended by St. Patrick himself. It continues
to this day in Co. Donegal, a pilgrimage for fasting, penance and prayer
-- not for the weak-hearted, but Seosai has managed to participate in it
twice! This will be a fitting start to the Green Season in Milwaukee..
The Celtic Women Lecture Series is a part of a wonderful weekend April
1 to 3 at the ICHC, plus April 6 at the UWM Hefter Center. After soaking
up all things Irish in March, come and see what the Scots have to offer
in April. It should be a notice of great Scottish April events in the years
to come. The admission fees are modest and family-friendly. Here is what
is on tap:
Friday April 1 Lecture Series 5:30 - 7 p.m.
Bob McWilliam - "The Wisconsin Official Tartan"
McWilliam designed a beautiful tartan for Wisconsin which is wending
its way through the State Legislature to become "official" (like the violet,
etc). He will present a framed piece of the tartan to the ICHC president
Tom Wiseman, for permanent display in the ICHC Lending Library. Bob will
describe all of the colors and meanings of the tartan and why it is important
to have our own State Tartan. The framed piece will be on display for the
whole week-end to come.
The Celtic Women have a supply of Wisconsin Tartan Buttons for sale
$2 each to benefit the coming Celtic Women conference in October.
Lecture admission $5 per person, with tea and cookies for all.
Saturday April 2
The entire ICHC building will be taken over by Scottish activities,
displays, food and entertainment. The bars open on all three floors with
clan tables on display, men in kilts and the famous Wisconsin Scottish
Raffle and more. The "Tartan Terrors" will perform its Spring Concert (
#3 in the Hallamór Series). This is a Scottish band that specializes
in humor & comedy as well as good Scottish music. Admission to the
concert is $15 advance or $17 at the door. No other admission required
for the evening which begins at 6 p.m. (concert at 7 p.m.)
The evening will be a fund-raiser for Wisconsin Scottish as they prepare
for their annual Highland Games in September.
Sunday April 3
Sit-Down Ceilidh at 2 p.m. with Flora MacDonald Gammon as mistress of
ceremonies. Gammon is very well-known to the Celtic Women of this area;
she will be around for the entire Scottish week-end. The ceilidh will include
appearances by Billy Mitchell Pipe Band, the Caledonian Dancers, Ian Day,
Charlie and Beth Johnson as well as Flora herself on the mountain dulcimer
and leading the musical bits.
Her lengthy article appeared in the latest An Gael Talk newsletter
gives the history and evolution of ceilidhs as she knew them in childhood.
Admission to the afternoon ceilidh will be $7 for adults if reserved
in advance and $10 at the door, children will be $5 at any time. The ceilidh
is a fund-raiser for the Conference of Celtic Women October 20-22 at the
ICHC.
