Events Set at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, Milwaukee

FRIDAY, Feb. 4 CELTIC ART EXHIBIT

A new Celtic art exhibit by local artist Julie San Felipe will have its grand opening on Friday evening, Feb. 4, following a musical performance by Sheila Shigley at the Celtic Women Lecture Series. The exhibit, "Poetic Dreams" will begin at 7 p.m. at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, featuring a wine and cheese reception with the artist. Her works are based on The Book of Kells and other ancient Irish art; her watercolor paintings are combined with calligraphy and are more contemporary. She weaves poetry and favorite songs into her original landscapes and people, animals, greenery and letters. Modernizing the traditional "over and under" weaving using knots, spirals and other ancient symbols keeps her connected to her Celtic heritage. While living in Milwaukee for most of her life, it's the Wisconsin trees, wildlife, pets, friends and dancers, and the natural clockwork of the seasons and stars that find their way as subjects into her paintings. Since 1999, San Felipe has taught Celtic valligraphy at the ICHC.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. The performance by Sheila Shigley, of the Madison group "Navan", begins at 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Her lecture has a fee of $5 with tea and biscuits included. This will make for a glorious evening of music and art with Julie San Felipe, our local rising star on the Celtic scene.

Green Suede Shoes, a Memoir by Larry Kirwan, Out in March

Thunder’s Mouth Press/Avalon will publish Green Suede Shoes by Larry Kirwan and Gadfly Records will concurrently release Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes by Black 47 on March 1.

A memoir written by Black 47 frontman Larry Kirwan, Green Suede Shoes begins in Wexford, Ireland, and traces the impact on a young Kirwan of his Irish Republican grandfather, his mysterious and often absent deep-sea sailing father, and first bandleader Elvis Murphy. These influences would propel him to the riotous Dublin of the early ‘70s and emigration to New York City where he would eventually form the political rock band, Black 47.

On the way he chronicles life in the anarchistic East Village, literary awakening in the Bells of Hell and the Lion’s Head, the seminal punk scene in CBGB’s, involvement in the Irish Civil Rights and Republican movements during Bobby Sands’ Hunger Strike, and life in the throbbing Irish bars and neighborhoods of the Bronx.

There are sketches of his work, interaction and friendships with such diverse characters as the McCourt Brothers, Lester Bangs, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Strummer, Nick Tosches, Shane McGowan, Fr. Mychal Judge, Ric Ocasek and a host of lesser known but equally vibrant New Yorkers from across the political and social spectrum.

The book gives a dry-eyed and unsparing account of the tumultuous trajectory of Black 47 from its roots in the Bronx and Paddy Reilly’s through a number of major record deals, toast of the town status, deaths of musical associates, van crashes, the shooting at the Academy, closing down of Hoboken, the tragedy of 9/11, and the band’s ongoing political commitment and opposition to the war in Iraq.

The simultaneous release of their CD, Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes, highlights some of the events referred to in Kirwan’s book. The disc is Black 47’s most raucous and stripped down outing since 1991’s eponymous independent debut. It takes us on a romp through "The Bells of Hell" with remembrances or appearances by Malachy McCourt, Lester Bangs, Nick Tosches, Billy Altman and Dennis Duggan.

The band reprises "Girl Next Door," the first ode to lesbianism to get national radio play before its banning in 1977. They commemorate "Elvis Murphy" in all his rockabilly glory and "Uncle Jim," Kirwan’s irrepressible relative, a priest home from the Philippine Islands, who took the boy on a hair-raising and quixotic mission to convert Rev Ian Paisley and avert the Northern Ireland conflict. The band notes its ongoing commitment to Irish civil rights with the tragic "Far Side of the Wall" and its opposition to President Bush’s vanity war in Iraq during the controversial "Downtown Baghdad Blues."

Taking their name from the blackest year of the Irish Potato Famine, Black 47 burst out of the Irish pub scene on the success of 1992’s Fire of Freedom (EMI). With their signature eclectic sound, socio-political lyrics and off-the-wall live shows they paved the way for other Irish influenced bands such as The Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. "Too long relegated to the fringes, this Irish-American band belongs to the diminishing ranks of rock acts that balance serious sonic thump with intelligent social commentary," remarked USA Today in a 2004 review of New York Town.

The band is lead by Larry Kirwan (guitar/vocals), whose plays have been performed both in the US and Europe, while his first novel Liverpool Fantasy, an alternate history of the Beatles, was published in 2003.

Black 47 will embark on a U.S. tour following the release of Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes, with confirmed two-show performance at The Knitting Factory in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day. Visit http://www.black47.com for tour updates and a full history of the band.

County Cork Association of New York to Hold Party

The County Cork Association of New York invites guest to join themin celebrating our 121st St. Patrick’s season, at our annual banquet in Antun’s, Springfield Gardens, Queens, New York City, on Saturday, March 5, 2005. This year we are delighted to honor two distinguished members of the Tri State’s County Cork community.

Larry Sullivan - Drimoleague, West Cork
Our Corkman of the Year is the ubiquitous Larry Sullivan, president and CEO of Conserve Electric. Larry is the epitome of the Irish immigrant success story. He immigrated to New York in the early 1960s from Drimoleague in West Cork. Larry began his New York career on the shop floor of the electrical supply business. In 1979, he opened his own electrical supply company, Conserve Electric on Crescent St., in Long Island City, New York City. The company has cultivated a client base, which includes the United Nations, Disney, ABC, NBC, Verizon, real estate management companies and electrical contractors. Under Larry’s capable and skillful leadership, Conserve has evolved into a multimillion dollar operation.

Sullivan wooed, courted and married Maureen Kelly, a native of Athenry, Co. Galway. The couple set up house in Upper Saddle River, N. J. They are the parents of three accomplished sons. Lawrence, the eldest, is a medical doctor specializing in adult and child psychology. He is in private practice in Scarsdale , N.Y. John is an orthopedic surgeon and a partner at Slocum - Dickson Medical Group in New Hartford, New York. John’s identical twin James is an attorney in private practice. He is a partner at the law firm of McDermott, Will and Emery in Manhattan. Sullivan and Maureen are also proud grandparents.

Sullivan is a longtime member and benefactor of the County Cork Association. He is well known for his philanthropy in the Tri State’s Irish American community. He has been the recipient of many professional and community service awards including, The John Marchese Power Engineer Award and The Irish Voice Dreamer of Dreams Award. In 2004, he was Honorary Grand Marshal of the Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Sullivan also belongs to the Irish American Building Society, Local Union #3, the National Association of Electrical Distributors, the Long Island City Business Develop.m.ent Corporation and the Executive Association of Greater New York. Of course, the most important role for Larry is his one of de facto mentor of, and counselor to, the "Cork boys " and, indeed, young immigrants from all over Ireland, on their climb up the ladder in New York.

Prior to emigrating Sullivan was a subcontractor haulier for Drinagh Co-op, traveling the highways and by ways of West Cork, servicing the creameries. He has many stories of the rich and diverse characters he encountered on his journeys in those days. Larry joins the pantheon of heroes and heroines honored by the County Cork Association of New York.

Frank T. Carvill Distinguished Service Award
On banquet night, the association will be instituting the Frank T. Carvill Distinguished Service Award, in memory of our beloved member Staff Sgt. Frank Carvill of the New Jersey National Guard, who was killed in action in Baghdad on June 4th 2004. Frank was an exceptional human being who had a place in his heart for everybody. He was a well-known activist in the Tri -State's Irish American Community. Free Joe Doherty, Irish Immigration Reform Movement, political exiles and deportees, name the cause and Frank was there.

He was also the 1st Vice President of the County Armagh Association. Although he could have legitimately avoided his combat tour, it was not in his nature to do so. He was one of the last of the boy scouts! Frank died on a street in Baghdad, fighting the enemies of Western Civilization, so that we would not have to fight them on the streets of New York, or indeed, of Dublin or Belfast. Ta leaba aige I measc na bhfinini! He rests ! among the Fenians!

Derry Greaney, Newmarket, mid Cork Fittingly, the first recipient of the Frank T. Carvill Award will be another Iraqi veteran. Derry Greaney is a native of Newmarket, in mid Cork. He was educated at the local national school, Kanturk Technical School, and Waterford Regional Technical College. He also served an apprenticeship as a welder and metal fabricator with the Golden Vale Co-op in North Cork. He played hurling and football with Newmarket

In 1984, Derry immigrated to New York. After working in various jobs, he secured a position as a machinist with the New York Times, where he is still employed. He was introduced to the County Cork Association by his relatives, veteran members Howie and Ellen Smith. Derry married New York born Doreen McMahon, who has Skibbereen connections. The couple lives in the Riverdale section of the Bronx with their two wonderful daughters, Kathleen and Alison.

In 1993, out of a sense of patriotic obligation, Derry joined the US Naval Reserve "Fighting Seabees," as a steel worker. He underwent basic training in New Orleans, and at the USMC base at Camp Le Jeune. In Feb. of 2003, he was activated for combat duty in the Middle East. In late March, he was among the first waves of G.I.s to enter and liberate Iraq.

"Greaney was not just a witness to the evidence of Saddam's Hussein's physical brutality against many Iraqis, but also the fear he instilled in the entire population . . . The people had nothing. And I saw some of the mass graves." - Irish Echo

By August of 2003, Derry's combat tour was winding down. He had already celebrated a very dry 40th birthday under canvas in Kuwait. While his unit was being transported back to the U.S., the plane touched down in Shannon, where Derry had an emotional, unexpected reunion with his family. His parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, had estimated the likelihood of his arrival on Irish soil and had made the chance journey from Newmarket to the County Clare airport. There followed a well-deserved pint of Guinness, or two, in the airport bar.

The County Cork Association of New York is honored to invest Derry Greaney as the first recipient of the Frank T. Carvill Distinguished Service Award.

Goodbye to Two Irish Roses
**************************
The Shamrock Club and the Milwaukee Irish community lost a pair of Irish
roses over the past week. Bernice Reilly and Mary Stephens were both former Shamrock Club Irish Roses. Both of them were extremely active in the Irish community in Milwaukee over the years, and contributed oh so very much to so very many. Bernice was known in the early years of Milwaukee Irish Fest as the voice of Irish Fest, as the information line to the festival was in her home. She was also the longtime membership chair for the Milwaukee chapter of the Shamrock Club. And she got to ride in the front of the parade as Parade Marshal one year, too.

Mary Stephens was an early Irish Rose. She instilled in her many children a sense of Irishness, and that gave this city and state a lot. Her daughter Julie is the President of the Milwaukee chapter of the Shamrock Club. Her granddaughter Bridget is the founder of the Glencastle Irish Dance School, and for many years turned out champion dancers at Trinity. Mary's other children, Michael, Mary, Kathleen, Pat and Terry, are involved with the Shamrock Club, Irish Fest, the Emerald Society, and sundried other groups.

Aussie Indie Brings Mongrel Music to Wisconsin

Brother, a fan favorite at festivals and venues throughout Wisconsin, will bring their eclectic mix of didgeridoos, bagpipes, tribal rhythms and rich vocal harmonies to The Northern Lights Theater at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee on Friday, March 11th and McAuliffe’s Pub in Racine on Saturday, March 12t. The Aussie trio blends Rock, Folk, Dance and tribal rhythms in an irresistibly charismatic live show.

The band is straight off their Australian summer tour dates, having performed for sell out audiences.

With their 2005 touring, Brother looks forward to continuing their work with children’s diabetes (through didg and percussion workshops) and highlighting the potential of stem cell research to fund cures for childhood diabetes, as well as a host of other debilitating diseases.

The band’s front-man and co-founder, Hamish Richardson has had diabetes since the age of 11.

When queried about the meaning of ‘mongrel music,’ Richardson responded, "We reckon it's a great metaphor for our sound and all the mixed influences that have brought us to this point." "In Australia, a mongrel is a loveable, loyal, tough mutt of a dog - you know, the kind of pup that could claim half the canine population as its parents.

Brother performs at:

The Northern Lights Theater, Potawatomi Casino, 1721 W. Canal S., Milwaukee, Friday, March 11, 9:00 pm

McAuliffe’s Pub, 3700 Meachem Rd., Racine, Saturday, March 12, 9:00 p.m., Tickets $12 Advance, $15 at the door

Irish Filmmaker Tackles Cuban Subjects

A documentary film from Cuba entitled "Mission Against Terror," will
have its Midwest premiere in Milwaukee on Feb. 8 and 9, featuring a
special appearance by one of its directors, an Irish journalist who
works in Cuba.

The movie tells the story of five Cuban nationals who monitored
extremist groups in Florida some 10 years ago to try to protect their homeland from terrorism, which has claimed more 3,000 lives in the last 45 years.

The "Cuban 5," as they are known internationally, are currently serving their seventh year in U.S. federal prisons, including Fernando Gonzalez in Oxford, Wis.

The first screening will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8,  at the Central
United Methodist Church, 639 N. 25th St. A second showing, also at 7 p.m., will take place the following day, on Wednesday, Feb. 9t, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union in the East Wisconsin Room, 2200 E. Kenwood Ave. Admission to both events is by donation, with $5-$10 suggested.

Milwaukee will hold this Midwest premiere in part because of one of
the "Cuban 5" remains in prison in Wisconsin, serving a 19-year sentence

The premiere features a special appearance by the film's co-director
Bernie Dwyer, an Irish woman who has lived and worked in Havana for the past four years as a journalist with Radio Havana. Dwyer was previously a lecturer in Women's Studies at University College in Dublin.

This is the fourth documentary film she has made with Cuban producer Ruiz Rebo, including  three prior films on the Irish heritage of Che Guevara and the Irish influence on the Cuban revolution: 1999, Che: The Irish Legacy (Che Guevara's Irish links); 2001, Che in Ireland (Che Guevara's visit to Dublin in 1964); and 2002, The Footprints of Cecilia McPartland (Irish mother of Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella).

Sponsors for this visit and screening include the Wisconsin Coalition
to Normalize Relations with Cuba, Milwaukee Committee to Free the Five, Peace Action - Wisconsin, National Lawyers Guild - Milwaukee Chapter, Milwaukee Coalition for a Just Peace, and YCL Milwaukee.

First Friday Lectures Plus for Celtic Women

February will be a big month for Celtic women, lecture and concert-wise.

Friday, Feb. 4 Topic:"The Kinship of Cornwall, Brittany and Wales in Song"
Speaker: Sheila Shigley, performs with the Celtic vocal ensemble, Navan, and teaches Celtic traditional singing for the University of Wisconsin. She may often be found in the Wis. Public Radio music library, archiving folk music to pay those bills not covered by the forementioned pursuits. During this lecture, she will examine - and the audience will experience - the singing traditions of Cornwall, Brittany and Wales, looking particularly at striking similarities in tune, story and/or imagery.

Following Shigley's musical lecture of Celtic song, plan on staying to viewthe opening art exhibit in Parlor B, featuring Julie San Felipe. There will be wine and cheese and Julie herself. The art opening is free to the public.

"POETIC DREAMS" an art exhibit by Julie San Felipe

MONDAY FEB. 7 Dennis Janzer Organ Concert "Hearts on the Avenue".
Dennis will be returning for his third annual concert on the ICHC magnificent Kimbal organ with over 4000 pipes. To hear the organ played at its fullest will get hearts pounding and pulses racing.
