Irish Sergeant to be Honored in Westport

Plans for the dedication of the grave of Sgt. Maj. Coughlan, VC, are at an advanced stage. A large attendance is expected at Aughavale Cemetery, Westport, Co. Mayo, Ireland, on Aug. 7.

The Minister for Defense will unveil a headstone dedicated to Sgt. Maj. Coughlan VC. The gallant Sgt. Maj. died in 1915 at the age of 87. He received his VC as a result of actions in Delhi in 1857 while serving with the 75TH ( Stirlingshire) Regiment (later Gordon Highlanders).

He subsequently served in 3rd Bn, The Connaught Rangers, and lived in Westport for 40 years. At the time of this most popular hero's death, a headstone was not erected. The course of Irish history then changed the following year with the 1916 Rising and honoring those many Irish soldiers who served in British forces became unpopular and eventually, Coughlan was forgotten by most people. His grave was unmarked, but thanks to the efforts of Jim McNally, the curator, it was located.

Times have now changed and the with the advent of broader political horizons, people are now in a position to view history with a new maturity and respect for other opinions and traditions. Military Heritage Tours Ltd are proud to announce that with the support from public subscription a headstone will be unveiled at the grave of Sgt. Maj. Coughlan VC on Aug. 7.

The Victoria Cross is the world's most famous award for bravery, rivaled only by the American Medal of Honour. Out of the 1,354 VC's ever awarded, over 200 have been awarded to Irishmen. This wonderful record should not be forgotten and the brave recipient's should be duly honored.

The fact that an Irish minister will dedicate this grave in the west of Ireland speaks volumes for changing attitudes and it is seen as a most magnanimous gesture by many people. It will also be a day in the history of this country that will in years to come, be seen as one on which a profound statement of political maturity was marked.

The Chief of Staff of the Irish Defense Forces, Lt .Gen. Sreenan is kindly providing troops from the Reserve Defence Forces (RDF) for this ceremonial occasion.

Many ex-servicemen's associations from the irish and British armies and disbanded regiments associations (Old Irish Regiments, British Army) will be present.

Following the dedication, an Irish Military Heritage display will take place in Murrisk village, four miles west of Westport. Organisations, including:

A.The Military Vehicles Club of Ireland

B. US Civil War re-enactors

C. Connaught Rangers re-enactors

D. 1930s Irish Army re-enactors

Any organization who would also like to be part of this Irish Military Heritage display would be welcome. Please contact dbuckley@anu.ie or 353 86 8889 883.

Also information on the "Heroes Return" program will be available. The Heroes Return is a UK-lottery funded plan that enables war veterans, accompanied by a family member or carer to visit a battlefield in which they fought. Military Heritage Tours Ltd is proud to have been the company chosen to facilitate Irish and other veterans living in the Republic to avail of this idea. This year alone, we have brought relatives of WW1 veterans to France and Belgium and we also brought veterans to Normandy in June for the 60th Anniversary commemorations of D Day and the Battle for Normandy. Further tours are in the planning stage.

Outline plan as follows:

1300 Minister arrives, inspects Guard of Honor

1305 Minister escorted to graveside

1308 Inter-denominational graveside prayers

1313 Talk on Coughlan VC and joint Anglo Irish Military Heritage

1335 Minister makes dedication and unveils headstone

1345 Wreath laying on behalf of ONE, Disbanded Regiments and RBL, etc.

1350 Volley from Connaught Ranger Re-enactors and Last Post on CR

Bugle played by an Irish Army bugler, with Colour Parties rendering honors

1355 Reply on behalf of the guests

1430 Reception and Military Heritage display in Murrisk village (four miles west)

People intending to travel to the area are advised to make accommodations as soon as possible because August is the height of the tourist season in this popular location.

Rowe to Visit Milwaukee ICHC, Sept. 19

Maine singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Rowe will present a concert at at 3 p.m., Sept. 19 , at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, The show will include Irish songs, Rowe’s original folk ballads, and high-energy bluegrass music as well as some of the maritime masterpieces written by his dad, the late Tom Rowe, who died earlier this year.

Rowe recently released a second critically-acclaimed solo album which he dedicated to his father, titled Big Shoes in reference to his musical legacy. Along with Irish tunes such as Four Green Fields and Fields of Athenry, Rowe covered his dad’s song John Cook on the recording.

Rowe grew up surrounded by music as he played under the soundboard while his dad mixed albums for his trio, Schooner Fare. By age 15, Rowe was performing professionally with the Makem Brothers. As a young adult, he led Irish and bluegrass bands and toured with rising Maine country artist Don Campbell before forming Rowe by Rowe with his dad in 1992. They became Turkey Hollow with the addition of Denny Breau in 1998. In addition to continuing Turkey Hollow with Breau and performing solo, Rowe fronts a new Irish/maritime/bluegrass group, the Dave Rowe Trio.

Tickets for the September show are $12 and may be ordered by sending a check payable to Cheshire Moon Studios to Kathy Schultz at 4830 N. Oakland Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53217. Ticket and concert information is also available by calling Schultz at 414-332-8521.

Sticks and Sliothars Can Break Bones...

*******************************************

The Hurling season is winding down. And it is nice to note that the Shamrock Club Griffins are in second place as of this writing in the Harp Division. Be nicer if it was first, but the playoffs are coming. August 8, to be precise, at Lake Park East, the old Gun Club site right on the lake. Last week of regulation play is August 1, so come down and root for your team. And if you do not have a team, come down and just yell whenever anyone else does, so you look like you belong. Finals are at Brown Deer Park on August 15, at 12:30, with the Youth League game being played prior to the main event.

And Matt Larsen is recovering from his recent defenestration. Luckily, the fall was from the basement window. Happily, his place was taken by cute as a button Karen Fink.

And speaking of Camogie, well, we weren't, but the Milwaukee Clash Camogie Team will represent Milwaukee at the Gaelic Athletic League National games in Denver on September 4-5. Those are the women of the Hurling Club, playing the female version of the game.

And the Hurler's Ball is at the Bavarian Inn on September 10. More information on it can be found at the link just beneath this.

Galway Releases First Deutche Grammophon CD GALWAY

Flute master James Galway will release his first album on Deutsche Grammophon, Wings of Song.  Dubbed "The undisputed Monarch of the flute" by the Dallas Star-Telegram, Galway’s unique sound, superb musicianship, and dazzling virtuosity have made him one of the most respected and sought-after performing artists of our time.  Widely acknowledged as the greatest living flute player, he is no stranger to the broad gamut of musical genres saturating today’s landscape.  The native Irishman has conquered everything from Celtic folk songs to popular radio hits, and now Galway surprises once again with Wings of Song, a collection of popular arias that showcases the lyrical sweet sound of the flute.

In his illustrious career, Sir James has made nearly 60 recordings as a solo artist in a dizzying array of musical styles ranging from The Essential Flute of James Galway (no.1 in the classical charts) to James Galway at the Movies, Legends (29 weeks in the top five of Billboard's World Music Chart). Galway’s best-selling albums include Annie's Song (1978), In the Pink with Henry Mancini (1984), James Galway and the Chieftains in Ireland (1987), Wind Beneath My Wings (1991) and Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto (1993).

He has performed with such pop stars as Shania Twain and Alanis Morrisette (among many others) and collaborated with icon Sir Elton John who wrote Galway’s Grammy Award-winning song "I Will Always Love You". He even had his own TV series, James Galway's Music in Time, in 1983, and took part in 1991's legendary performance of Pink Floyd's The Wall in Berlin. He also performs on several tracks from the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in a score composed and conducted by Academy Award-winner Howard Shore.

"The Man With The Golden Flute" (Sir James) celebrates his sixty-fifth birthday this year as he embarks on a 2004-2005 U.S. tour.  His first appearance will be in Washington DC with the National Symphony Orchestra (9/26/04), and he will bring in the New Year with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1/6-11/05).  Complete tour dates are listed below.  Galway currently lives in Switzerland near Lake Lucerne with his wife, American-born flutist Jeanne Cinnante.  They share a duet (Offenbach’s Barcarole from Les Contes d’Hoffman) on Wings of Song. In June, 2001 Mr. Galway received the honor of knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and even has a rose named after him- the Galway Rose.

Arranmore CD Released

Toucan Cove Entertainment (distributed by Madacy Entertainment, Montreal Canada) is proud to announce the release of new CD product by Irelands' Rig the Jig, Two Time Polka and Chicago-based Arranmore

Rig the Jig's new CD "Passing Through" is slated for release on Aug 10. The group will be making a brief stop in the States this August.

Arranmore's CD "The Collection" Is scheduled for release at the end of Aug. This CD is a collection of previous cuts by the act on earlier CDs. Some cuts have long been out of print. The CD will also include two brand new cuts making it a total of 17 tracks on this CD. Some of the songs appearing on "The Collection" will be "South Side Irish," "I&M Canal," "Danny Boy," "Magie," "Sweet Memories" plus an exciting new version of the classic Richard Thompson song "The Dimming of the Day."

"The Very Best of Two Time Polka" is the first release in the States by Ireland's premier Cajun/Roots band. It is a combination of tracks assembled from the group's previous two CDs. This is one hot, hot band. No wonder Hot Press, Irish Music Magazine and No Depression are raving about this act. They are rapidly creating a buzz on this side of the Atlantic.
