Friday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Author and musician Sean McCabe will bring stories from his book about growing up during the 1970s and '80s in County Meath, Ireland to the parlour of the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center on Friday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m. McCabe, who fronts the New York City-based band the McCabes, will also sing original songs and accompany himself on mandolin and guitar. The Irish Center’s parlour, also known as Quinlan’s Pub, is the perfect venue for this intimate evening of stories and songs. McCabe’s recently released memoir, “A Good Deed and Other Stories,” contains seventeen interconnected short stories. The stories evoke small-town Irish life, with tales that include a knuckle-slapping nun who tries to teach an unwilling student to play the piano, and a first confession that goes terribly wrong. Many of the stories have been published in Ireland’s popular magazine, Ireland’s Own. A review by Cahir O’Doherty in the Irish Voice commented, “If you enjoy unadorned recollections of the recent past, have I got a book for you … written in a homespun you-are-there prose style that conjures his childhood and adolescence so vividly you will feel like you’ve come along for the entire ride yourself.” McCabe studied at Trinity College in Dublin and earned a master’s degree in English literature. He moved to New York in 1994 with the intention of forming an Irish band. The McCabes perform nationally and have released four albums. Admission at the door is $10.
