An
annual event benefiting ASHRAE research
| This was the 6th year for
the Salmon Extravaganza and we returned to our traditional 2-day event,
with boats going out on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 9 and the Morning
of Friday, Sept. 10. Thursday Evening was cool with the wind
straight out of the North at about 10 mph. Waves were about 3’ high
and the sky as full of dark clouds. Ben Orr, Charter Captain and
organizer of the charter boats for this year’s event, told me that the
north wind had the bay stirred up and only one boat had caught a fish that
morning. So we were prepared for a low fish count.
However, due to the hard work of our excellent captains all of the boats
caught fish. The R.L. Deppmann boat had the heaviest catch on Thursday
with four Chinook Salmon totaling about 40 lbs. And to cap it off,
the day ended with a spectacular sunset! |
| Thursday morning couldn’t
have been more different. The sky was filled with stars and there
was not a puff of wind when the boats started leaving the marina at 6 A.M.
With the improvement in the weather, Friday resulted in more fish.
A total of 23 trout, salmon and even whitefish were brought to the dock
on Friday. This did not include some Lake Trout that had to be released
because they were out of the 20” – 25” slot limit currently in affect on
the bay. The Lochinvar boat had the heaviest catch on Friday with
(4) salmon weighing in at 49.6#. Also, the biggest fish of the event
was also landed on Friday: a 17.5# Chinook Salmon landed by Mike
Mc Adams from Traverse City Area Schools. Mike was fishing on the
Johnson Controls boat. It was Mike’s lucky day, since he was also
the winner of the 50/50 raffle!
The 2010 Salmon Extravaganza
was our biggest yet. With over 50 participants and 10 boats, the
event earned $2,220 for ASHRAE research. Special thanks to
Melissa Melton and Chuck Watson, who’s perennial volunteering helps to
make this event possible. |
